What the heck is a Fisharee/Chickaree?
Well, this one goes back a bit to the creation of Lake Montesian. In celebration of the Lake, an annual ice-fishing tournament was held sponsored by the Green County Conservation League in partnership with the Monticello Lions Club. When the lake was being rehabiliated, and all the fish had been removed, the decision was made to keep a winter event alive so the Chicakaree was added. Over time, the Conservation League turned the event over to the Lion's Club leaving an opening for Monticello Community Club the to join in the fun. Funds raised benefit a variety of local programs including vision screening, awarding scholarships, building parks, and more. The event is held the Sunday before the Superbowl since there's no football on that weekend! Prizes are awarded for the largest fish, most fish, smallest fish and more! And then there's the wonderful grilled chicken. Order early!
